Iain Barker, Principal
Iain Barker, principal at Meld Studios, is customer-centred designer and consultant with over 20 years experience making structured use of customer insights to inform business problems, drive business value and deliver great customer experiences across a range of channels.
With a background in digital channels, he has spent the last five years conceptualising and delivering joined-up cross-channel service experiences for a range of industries including finance, telecommunications, education and media.
He is passionate about helping organisations explore concepts, facilitating stakeholder engagement and turning intangible ideas into tangible prototypes.
Iain started his professional life as a technical writer helping people work out how to use unusable software. He has spent the rest of his career trying to make sure products and services are designed correctly in the first place.
Steve Baty, Principal
Steve Baty, principal at Meld Studios, has over 15 years experience as a design and strategy practitioner. Steve is well-known in the area of strategy and design, contributing to public discourse on these topics through articles and conferences.
Steve serves as President of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA); is a regular contributor to UXMatters.com; a contributor to Johnny Holland (johnnyholland.org), and is the founder of UX Book Club – a world-wide initiative bringing together user experience practitioners in over 80 locations to read, connect and discuss books on user experience design. Steve is co-Chair of UX Australia – Australia’s leading conference for User Experience practitioners; and Chair of Interaction 12 – the annual conference of the IxDA for 2012.
Steve has, over the past six years, led design-driven strategy and innovation projects for clients across a broad spread of industries including: financial services, tourism, travel, transport, consumer electronics, manufacturing, government, and the arts.
Steve holds post-graduate degrees in electronic commerce (M.Ec) and business administration (MBA) from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management; and a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics (Physical Mathematics & Applied Statistics) from UTS.
Janna DeVylder, PrincipalJanna DeVylder, principal at Meld Studios, is the former Director of Interactive Communication at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) in Savannah, Georgia. She managed a multi-disciplinary team overseeing the university’s websites and was a key contributor to how SCAD utilized digital channels to meet its brand and communication strategies. Prior to SCAD, Janna directed a team of interaction designers for Arc Worldwide, a Leo Burnett company. In addition, she has led large-scale strategy, information architecture and user experience projects for Orbitz, McDougal Littell and Giant Step. Janna is very active in the community, having recently served as the President of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA), an international organization dedicated to advancing the discipline of interaction design, for three years.
Janna received her master’s degree from the University of Chicago with an emphasis in psychology and anthropology, and holds an honor’s Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Iowa.
Eric Folger, Principal
Eric Folger, principal at Meld Studios, is a seasoned executive and designer who's expert at making design accessible and effective for organisations. He has a strong interest in the intersection of design and management, and focuses on strategy, usability, experience, innovation, and organisational change issues. Eric brings with him a broad and extensive background in both business and design, with deep expertise in financial services, specialty retail, e-commerce, and product design.
Eric was the former Principal of Design at AMP Financial Services, and has worked in the past for large organisations such as Suncorp, Victoria's Secret, and American Eagle Outfitters. He's also enjoyed working within strategy consulting and product design and manufacturing. He’s been fortunate to have worked and lived in the United States, China, Europe, and Australia. Eric is a keen advocate for the use of empathy-based design to manage the complexity of developing compelling services for organisations. He's provided strong thought leadership in the use of design within strategy, organisational development, innovation, product and service development, and user experience. He enjoys a continued collaboration with Universities, businesses, and design practitioners to promote, develop, and improve design and design capability within Australia.
Eric has a Masters degree in Design Methods from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Institute of Design, as well as holding a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in Cinematography from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
Kimberley Crofts, Designer
Kimberley has over 16 years experience in communication design. She has worked as a senior art director, in Australia and Hong Kong, for clients in the publishing, arts and not-for-profit arenas.
Most recently, Kimberley has been in London working in online and mobile spaces as a design specialist for Nokia and a user experience designer for bSkyb.
Kimberley holds a post-graduate degree in Information Design from the University of Reading (UK); and a bachelor’s degree in visual communication from UTS.
Joanna Hill, Designer
For over a decade Joanna worked as a web and user experience designer for Australian digital agencies including Massive Interactive, Lemonade and DT Digital as well as client side at Ericsson Australia.
In 2008 Joanna moved to Paris to work as an Art Director for advertising agency OgilvyOne where she helped shaped digital campaigns and strategies for global and European clients including Nestlé Global and Mattel France and Yahoo Europe.
Joanna has recently returned to Australia from the UK having worked as a Service Designer for Social Innovation outfit Snook, specialising in the practical application of user centered design methodologies.
Joanna holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (COFA, Sydney) and Diploma of Interactive Art Direction (Hyper Island, Stockholm).
Chris O'Brien, Designer
Chris is a consultant with over 18 years experience in helping global organisations to understand their customers, and deliver clear, simple, and engaging communications, with a close eye on business value.
Working in digital since the birth of the industry, Chris has a rare blend of experience across all facets of digital communications. After studying Computer Science, Chris started as an HTML developer in 1995, and transitioned to UX, via back-end development, project management, digital strategy, and team leadership. Chris' work has spanned websites, extranets, intranets, kiosks, exhibitions, and mobile, working for clients in the UK, US, Europe, and Australia.
Most recently, Chris has shifted from a purely digital focus, to delivering broader cross-channel services across a range of industries.
Niina Talikka, Designer
Niina Talikka, designer at Meld Studios, has 14 years of experience working for digital agencies in Sydney and London. She has managed the design and development of web sites, integrated campaigns and e-commerce solutions for a broad range of clients from car manufacturers to travel, and from fast moving consumer goods to education. Amongst project management roles, she has also worked as a web developer and as an operations manager where she researched and designed a production process to manage workflow through a digital studio.
Over the last few years Niina has been actively encouraging teams and clients to understand the importance of information architecture, user experience, usability and accessibility by sharing knowledge and demonstrating the impacts of considered design.
Marius Koppang, Designer
Marius is an industrial designer from Norway. He has extensive experience of working in multidisciplinary teams to solve complex problems. Over time his focus has shifted from products to services and interaction design. In this new space he uses his skills to help businesses to improve and create new services.
Marius has received his masters degree in Industrial Design from Aalborg University in Denmark. Aalborg University focuses on interdisciplinary work and problem solving. To broaden his work and cultural experience Marius has worked for various companies in both Europe and Asia.
Jono Yang, DesignerJono joined Meld Studios in 2011 as a junior interaction and service designer. Over the years he has participated in the full breadth of the design process with the collaboration of stakeholders and customers, from research, design concept, testing, iteration to final delivery.
Jono also has a passion for spatial design and the urban environment. This has propelled him to develop a keen interest in public transport, city making and behavioural design.
Jono received his Masters degree in Design from the University of Technology Sydney with an emphasis in human centred design and social change design. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Design (Interior) from Unitec New Zealand with previous studies in Science at the University of Auckland.
Janni Trinh, Designer
Janni Trinh is an industrial designer from Denmark. She has an interdisciplinary education focussing on both engineering and design. She has worked on a variety of design-related work from product design & development, strategic design, service design, usability testing to design research.
Janni is passionate about creating long-lasting and meaningful design solutions by identifying people’s behaviour, researching trends and identifying new possibilities. She most enjoys working in the cross-section between the aesthetical and practical fields.
She graduated in Industrial Design from Aalborg University in Denmark. She moved from Denmark to Australia in the beginning of 2013 to start her career in service and interaction design. She worked as a designer in Shanghai for a year during her studies.
Dominique Gagarin, Designer
Dominique is a junior designer at Meld Studios with a Bachelor in Visual Communications from the University of Technology Sydney. She began as an intern with Meld Studios and eagerly continued on after graduating. She lends her skills as a visual communicator and illustrator to concepting and communicating products and services in engaging ways and continues to learn and engage from her environment, applying her curiosity, empathy and sensitivities as a designer.
Her passion to learn and understand behaviours and people pushes her to grow and mature as a designer. She has delved into the complexities of organisations and systems and has been challenged to understand and engage with the breadth of research, analysis and synthesis it demands. She has also been exposed to elements of information architecture, wire framing, user testing and workshop facilitation.
